When should I file a claim?

August 23 2024 7:47pm

Most insurance policies – ours included –  require you to report claims of any size and type. And the sooner you start the claims process the better. Quick action gives you a better chance at recalling the details of your loss and puts the matter one step closer to being resolved.

The idea of reporting any and all damage may make some homeowners nervous that their premiums may increase. However, many states have laws that prohibit insurance companies from holding catastrophic claims against policyholders. The idea is that people don’t have as much control over some types of loss (e.g., hurricane damage) as they do over others (e.g., dog bites).

Long story short? You need to file a claim when you have any damage. Besides, that's what you have insurance for!
