Does my insurance cover Solar Panels?

Homeowners insurance does cover solar panels if they are:

  • Permanently attached to the home’s roof

  • Owned by the homeowner

  • Financed to be owned

Solar panels that are leased, not owned, will not be covered by your Kin policy. The company from which you rent your panels will most likely require you to hold around $1,000,000 in liability coverage; however, the highest amount we offer on our policies at Kin is $500,000. In these cases, you will need to get an umbrella policy elsewhere since our policies won't cover them.

Kin’s homeowners insurance will also cover Tesla Roofs. We will require you to send in a paid invoice or receipt that shows the total value, so we can add that amount to your Dwelling Coverages.

In Florida, any system over 12.8 kW requires additional liability coverage that Kin doesn’t currently offer.

Solar panels on sheds, barns, and other structures are not covered by your standard dwelling coverages. However, insurance for these other structures may be added to your policy through additional coverage options. Be sure to talk to your sales representative to discuss your options!

When covered, your solar panels have the same perils coverage as your home. Kin’s dwelling insurance offers open-perils coverage, this means your solar panels are covered for every incident except those explicitly listed as exclusions in the policy (such as acts of war, earth movement, birds and vermin, etc.). That means your panels are covered for hurricane winds, hail, fire, vandalism, theft, and a whole lot more.

Do solar panels add a discount to the policy? Unfortunately, solar panels will actually cause a premium increase since the amount of Dwelling Coverage needs to be higher to include the panels.

Ideally, your solar panels will enjoy their full lifespan – usually 25 to 30 years – and effectively eliminate your energy bill. The best way for your solar panels to last – and to prevent claims – is to keep up on maintaining your solar panels.
